Modern Foreign Languages

Learn a language. Stand out!

To inspire a passion for and create awareness of different cultures. To develop resilience, confidence and courage and enable you to stand out from the crowd and to embrace difference.

At Wolfreton every young person has the opportunity to learn a Modern Foreign Language with some choosing to study two.  We are able to offer French, German, Spanish and Japanese to GCSE and A Level. Young people at Wolfreton benefit from a wide range of international and language-related activities. These activities could include:

  • After-school language classes in Japanese
  • Taking part in projects with our partner schools in Argentina, France, Germany, Spain and Japan
  • Cultural visit to France
  • Work Experience in France and Spain
  • Trips abroad to France, Spain and Germany

We also work closely with our partner primary schools and other secondary schools in the area to improve access to language learning opportunities.

Homework and Additional Resources

Across the year groups, teachers will set homework as appropriate.  Homework will be set to enhance learning not simply for the sake of setting homework.  This may include written work, research or revision.  In addition, students are encouraged to:

  • Use the websites to which Wolfreton subscribe to practise vocabulary using a range of language games.
  • Watch DVDs with English subtitles and try to work out how the language they hear fits the subtitles.
  • Read a book or a magazine in the language they study.
  • Listen to music from the country whose language they are studying.
  • Use the internet to watch live TV, news broadcasts and adverts.

All students in years 7, 8 and 9 are encouraged to complete the activities in their Learning Beyond the Classroom booklets.
